Dr KAMAL VATTA TO HEAD DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS AND SOCIOLOGY AT PAU

Dr Kamal Vatta has been appointed as the new Head, Department of Economics and Sociology, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. A gold medallist in Ph.D (Agri. Economics) from PAU, he also topped in the advanced diploma in agricultural research for development from International Center for Development Oriented Research in Agriculture, The Netherlands in 2002. Dr Vatta also underwent advanced training in quantitative economics at Columbia University, New York, USA. He has worked extensively on natural resource management, especially groundwater, agricultural policy, integrated rural development and non-farm sector in India. He has more than 100 publications of international and national repute and has also participated in more than 100 international and national conferences, seminars and workshops. PAU HOLDS WORKSHOP ON CONTEMPORARY SOCIAL ISSUES AND PUNJAB AGRICULTURE

A one-day workshop on “Contemporary Social Issues and Punjab Agriculture” was organized by the Department of Economics and Sociology, and the Indian Society for Agricultural Development and Policy at the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today. PAU ORGANIZES NORTH ZONE REGIONAL TRAINING ON DATA VALIDATION

The Department of Economics and Sociology, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), organized a three-day North Zone Regional Training on “Data Validation” for Assistant Statisticians and Field Supervisors of the Cost of Cultivation Scheme. Officials from Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DES), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India, imparted training on online data entry and validation for Assistant Statisticians and Field Supervisors of Cost of Cultivation (COC) Scheme of four Northern States comprising Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab. PAU STUDENTS VISIT KHANNA GRAIN MARKET, INTERACT WITH FARMERS

The students’ club of the Department of Economics and Sociology, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), organized an exposure visit under the guidance of Professor and Head Dr Kamal Vatta and supervision of Assistant Farm Economist Dr Sangeet Ranguwal. The visit, which was a part of educational activity, was taken up by 35 students; it aimed at enhancing their practical knowledge regarding various marketing aspects and farmers’ problems in this regard. PAU VIRTUAL KISAN MELA CONCLUDES, 2 LAKH FARMERS AND FARM WOMEN PARTICIPATE

The two-day Virtual Kisan Mela concluded at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today. More than 2 lakh farmers and farm women participated in the mela. Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice-Chancellor, PAU, thanked the farmers and the farm women for their massive participation in the Virtual Kisan Mela, which was organized keeping in view the COVID-19 pandemic. “There is a lot to learn from the farmers,” he said. The Consultant Crop Insurance from Government of Haryana, Mr Dharmendra Sharma delivered a lecture on the “Risk Management in Agriculture” at the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today. The Field days on Direct seeded rice were organized at village Hardyaleana and Doad under the aegis of Directorate of Extension Education, PAU, Ludhiana in which more than 100 farmers participated enthusiastically. Dr. M S Bhullar, Head, Department of Agronomy stressed to adopt the practice of tar-vattar technique in DSR. PAU Vice Chancellor, Dr Satbir Singh Gosal inaugurated the advanced Statistical Data Analysis Lab at the Department of Economics and Sociology. The new lab is equipped with personal computers and advanced statistical data analysis software. He highlighted that India advocates the title of the fastest-growing economy based on real GDP percentage while it ranks quite low in terms of per capita income, multidimensional poverty index, and human development index. PAU ECONOMIST APPOINTED RESEARCH FELLOW IN JAPANESE VARSITY

Dr Kamal Vatta, Professor, Department of Economics and Sociology, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), has been appointed as Research Fellow at the Research Institute of Economics and Business at Kobe University, Japan. This is an honorary position and Dr Vatta will work with the Global Economy Unit. There are a total of 12 Research Fellows with the Global Economy Unit working in USA, UK, India, China and Japan. The appointment is for the period from November 1, 2023 to March 31, 2029. Kobe University has a QS ranking of 476 and has faculty strength of more than 1,600 with nearly 16,000 students. Dr Vatta was a Visiting Researcher to Kobe University from October to December in 2012. ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF ISADP CONCLUDES AT PAU, BEST PAPERS OF ECONOMISTS REWARDED

The two-day Annual Conference of the Indian Society for Agricultural Development and Policy (ISADP) concluded at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). The virtual conference, where a total of 50 papers were presented, saw the participation of 170 participants from Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Haryana, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu. PAU PROFESSOR ELECTED AS HONORARY SECRETARY OF ISAE, MUMBAI

Dr Kamal Vatta, Professor and Former Head, Department of Economics and Sociology, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), has been elected as Honorary Secretary and Treasurer of the Indian Society of Agricultural Economics in its recently held 83rd Annual Conference at the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology, Bhubaneswar. The Society, since 1939, is striving for promoting research in agricultural economics and its dissemination in India and other countries. Distinguished agricultural economists like Sir Malcolm Darling, Dr ML Dantwala and Dr SS Johl have been among the past Presidents of the Society; and Dr ML Dantwala, Dr MB Desai and Dr TR Sundaram among its past Honorary Secretaries. ISAE PRESIDENT DR DK MAROTHIA INTERACTS WITH AGRI-ECONOMICS STUDENTS AT PAU

Dr DK Marothia, President of the Indian Society of Agricultural Economics (ISAE) in Mumbai, visited the Department of Economics and Sociology, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), to interact with faculty and students of the department. Dr Marothia is a National Coordinator of the National Institute of Ecology, and a member of the Technical Advisory Board of the Global Ever Greening Alliance. Earlier, Dr Marothia was a Chairman of the Commission for Agriculture Costs and Prices, Government of India, and Member of the Chhattisgarh State Planning Commission. During a warm interaction, Dr Marothia emphasized the importance of conserving natural resources and highlighted studies related to agro-ecosystems and environmental sociological issues.
